Summary
The Catholic Church in Australia dates back to the first Irish convicts to arrive in New South Wales in 1788. Melbourne's first Catholic priest, a Franciscan Friar, Patrick Bonaventure Geoghan, arrived in May 1839. Through various religious orders, the Catholic Church in Australia has a long history of involvement in the 'care' of children.
