Summary
Sir C. Irving Benson came to Melbourne from Yorkshire in 1916. Ordained in April 1922, he ministered at the Albion Street Church, Brunswick, until recruited in 1926 to Central Methodist Mission at Wesley Church. He was appointed Superintendent Minister of the Wesley Central Mission in 1933 and held the position until 1967.
Details
Sir C. Irving Benson came to Melbourne from Yorkshire in 1916, and the Victorian Methodist Home Missionary Society first appointed him to Cavendish, near Hamilton in rural Victoria.
In 1918 Benson was accepted as a probationer for the Methodist ministry and appointed to Toorak, Melbourne. Ordained in April 1922, he ministered at the Albion Street Church, Brunswick, until recruited in 1926 to Central Methodist Mission at Wesley Church.
Benson's preaching built up a large congregation at Wesley in Lonsdale Street. He was appointed Superintendent Minister of the Wesley Central Mission in 1933 and held the position until 1967.
Benson was a prominent figure in Melbourne, giving regular radio broadcasts, writing columns for the Melbourne Herald and overseeing the popular Pleasant Sunday Afternoon (PSA) gatherings, which were also broadcast on radio.
